The NYSE is a Massive Building
Video Transcript
All right, I got some facts about the New York Stock Exchange. It's a massive building. It's actually multiple buildings. This is the main one you're used to seeing back here behind me. Its front is made of marble, but several other buildings also make up what you would consider the entire New York Stock Exchange.
It's over 31,000 ft in size, and it's the only global stock exchange that has an active trading floor. So that thing you see in movies where a bunch of people running around yelling buy and sell with pieces of paper - that's what they're talking about. It's a 15,000-foot trading floor. It's not used as much these days because so much has gone digital.
It was exciting to learn that they switched to using computer assistant trading in the 50s and 60s. I had no idea they'd been doing it for that long, but as you can imagine now, in 2024, most of that can be done very quickly online without needing people to be on the floor. But it still keeps some traders there, and as you can imagine, in 2024, with the technology we have now, so much more of the trades are done electronically, so there's not as much need for an active trade floor, but they still maintain it.
