Truliant is First NC Financial Institution to Earn Family Forward NC Certification
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (April 18, 2024) – Truliant Federal Credit Union recently became North Carolina’s first financial institution to become a Family Forward NC Certified Employer. The designation is provided by the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation.
Family Forward NC was launched in 2018 to improve children’s health and well-being and keep North Carolina’s businesses competitive. The certification designates employers that offer best-practice policies in one or more of five main areas, including paid leave, child care support, health and wellness benefits, and more.
Its goal is to show potential employees, customers and stakeholders that workplaces have practices in place to support pregnant workers, parents and caregivers.
“This certification is a strong validation of the work and the programs Truliant has put into action to ensure we prioritize the health and well-being of our families,” said Sherri Thomas, chief administrative officer of Truliant.
Employers who want to join the effort by becoming a Family Forward NC Certified Employer must have:
- Paid leave
- Accommodations for pregnant and breastfeeding workers
- Child care support
- Health and wellness benefits
- Allows all employees working at least 30 hours a week to be eligible for benefits
- Have written policies available to all employees
While Truliant is based in Winston-Salem, its certification helps support efforts by Action Greensboro, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation’s Family Forward NC to make Greensboro the first Family Forward NC Certified Community in the state. The initiative, known as Future Ready Greensboro, aims to have at least 85,000 employees in Greensboro work for Family Forward NC Certified Employers by 2025.
To date, 58 employers in North Carolina are Family Forward NC Certified, 21 of which are in Greensboro. Of Truliant’s workforce, 54 Greensboro employees will be counted toward the Future Ready Greensboro campaign.
“We are proud to support Greensboro in its efforts to become a certified community as we receive this designation from the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation,” said Truliant’s Thomas, who is also chair of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
There is a two-step application process for certification consideration. Truliant filled out an application to see if the credit union’s policies met the required certification thresholds. The North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation reviewed Truliant’s written policies and spoke with human resources leadership at the credit union. Truliant was then given an anonymous survey to distribute to employees. The survey asked about Truliant’s policies and the company culture.
The certification process scores an employer’s human resources policies based on 19 individual elements that fall under the following five categories: paid leave and wages; flexible work and scheduling; health benefits and flexible health spending account; child care; accommodations and support.
