Truliant Foundation Donors Help to Raise $64,000 for Hurricane Relief
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (January 23, 2025)—Truliant Federal Credit Union and the Truliant Foundation today announced a $64,000 donation to Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. The donation is part of a matching funds campaign that took place in November and December to support Hurricane Helene relief in western North Carolina.
The donation funds pre-paid Visa gift cards that will reach those impacted by Hurricane Helene in Buncombe, Henderson, and Watauga counties through Goodwill’s Good Neighbor Program, which provides gift cards to those needing help during a crisis.
Truliant’s Donate Dollars matching funds campaign sought to support critical needs for essential cold-weather items like coats, blankets, gloves, hand warmers, and generators, gas, and propane to stay warm. For every donation made to the Truliant Foundation, Truliant matched dollar for dollar which led to a total Donate Dollars campaign gift of $64,000 to Goodwill.
Giving to the Foundation came from Truliant members and individuals from communities across the credit union’s footprint, and beyond. From the campaign, 71 percent of gifts to the Truliant Foundation were $100 or less. More than 25 percent of the funds raised came from donations inside Truliant’s branches. Donations were received from as far away as Washington State, Rhode Island, and Texas.
Since the hurricane devastated communities in northwest North Carolina in September 2024, Truliant and the Truliant Foundation have donated more than $100,000 to the recovery efforts.
“We are proud to continue playing a proactive role in supporting communities devastated by Hurricane Helene,” said Todd Hall, president and CEO of Truliant. “We are extremely thankful to our members who donated and to everyone who donated to the Truliant Foundation to make their gifts go even further. We could not have responded as meaningfully without their donations.”
Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina initially set up four relief hubs for people in the communities hit by Helene. Its remaining relief hub in Marion, McDowell County, continues to provide information about filing for Disaster Unemployment Assistance, FEMA claims, and other benefits.
“Truliant and the Truliant Foundation have truly fulfilled the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ by stepping up their efforts to provide support in the wake of Helene,” said Barbara Maida-Stolle, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. “Their contribution will support the many who are still continuing to rebuild their lives.”
For Helene relief, the Truliant Foundation also contributed to the Carolinas Credit Union Disaster Relief Fund. It provided additional support to credit union employees and 16,000 bottles of water to support immediate relief needs in upstate South Carolina. Additional funding was given to the League of Southeastern Credit Unions' Disaster Relief Program to support credit union relief efforts. A donation was also made to support the Winston-Salem Police Department officers and staff as they assisted with recovery operations in western North Carolina.
“We are deeply grateful to every donor who gave to the Foundation during the Donate Dollars matching funds campaign,” said Atticus Simpson, executive director of the Truliant Foundation. “Because of their support, and the partnership between Truliant, the Truliant Foundation, and Goodwill, we are able to do more on a larger scale so that families will now experience more comfort that they otherwise may not have had.”
In addition to other efforts, Truliant employees also supported a Truliant Foundation-sponsored supply drive by providing household items to those impacted.
