Truliant's Diverse Board of Directors Reflects Its Membership and Employees
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 6, 2023) – Truliant Federal Credit Union is proud to announce that for the first time in its history a majority of the voting members on its board of directors represent racial and gender diversity. This marks a significant milestone in Truliant’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) throughout the organization.
“At Truliant, we have been intentionally developing stronger diversity, equity and inclusion practices for many years. It’s one of the key pillars of our company’s culture,” said James T. “Jimmy” Flythe, the chairman of the board of directors.
Truliant has nine voting members on the board of directors. The new majority for diverse members happened in April. There are now four women and one man of color on the board.
Developing a diverse board of directors has been a long-term effort at Truliant that has evolved through its associate director program. Associate directors are not eligible to vote, but they bring varied experiences and backgrounds to board activities and meetings. Currently, there is one associate in the program. She is a person of color.
“We have successfully grown representation over many years through the associate-director process,” Flythe said. “This ex-officio role helps candidates learn the nuances of full-board membership. As a pathway to full-board membership, it has been critical to growing representation, and its composition continues to underscore the importance of board diversity at Truliant.”
Having a diverse board helps Truliant more closely align with its more than 300,000 members. And it plays a crucial role in shaping Truliant’s strategic direction, presenting diverse perspectives and positively influencing the decision-making process.
“We believe in the importance of exposing ourselves to a broad base of ideas that will create meaningful financial solutions for our members,” Flythe said. “This same focus also applies to ensuring that our more than 950 employees feel welcome, comfortable and supported at work.
“To this end, we have continually developed stronger recruiting of diverse candidates for our board, the governing body of our organization. It’s a major asset that four of our board members are female. This helps better reflect the 69 percent of our employees who are women.
“The goal isn’t for diverse board members to assimilate into the existing culture, but for the board to embrace the new perspectives and evolve new and more diverse ways of operating,” Flythe said. “Our goals at Truliant are member- and employee-focused. We simply want representation that reflects the members and employees we serve now and in the future.”
